Polk County is located on the southeastern corner of Tennessee and is bordered by North Carolina and Georgia. The county was established in 1839 and named in honor of Governor and President James K. Polk and the county seat is Benton.

As the most southeastern county in Tennessee, it is the state's only county to share borders with both Georgia and North Carolina. Most of the terrain of Polk County is mountainous, constituting part of the southern Blue Ridge Mountains, among the southern Appalachian Mountains.

The Polk County Commission (a.k.a. County Legislative Body) is a body that is made up of 10 commissioners from the four voting districts of the county.
