Google quietly corrected an ad featuring its chatbot that claimed Gouda made up 60% of the world’s cheese consumption.

Google debuted a pair of new Super Bowl commercials that portray AI as a technology that’s as central to people’s lives as the phone or computer they access it on. But, like some of Google’s other Super Bowl ads, the company is once again attempting to make you pull out your tissues in between plays.

Google’s Super Bowl ad features a Wisconsin cheesemaker who uses Google’s Gemini AI tool to write cheese descriptions.

Ad sparked unexpected controversy when it errantly claimed that Gouda accounts for “50 to 60 percent of the world’s cheese consumption.”

Google simply cannot escape the drama related to its Super Bowl Sunday ad campaign that is supposed to promote its Gemini AI model. What was originally thought to be a bit of hallucinated information from Gemini—which would be bad all on its own—turns out to have not even come from Gemini at all.

In the ad, McConaughey dines outdoors during a rainstorm because his booking app failed to adjust his reservations, humorously highlighting the importance of AI in customer service.
