Finally, Rafael Devers can breathe a sigh of relief -- though he’ll be the first to tell anyone who asks, he was never holding his breath. To the joy of the Boston faithful in attendance at Camden Yards on Wednesday night,
Things continue to go from bad to worse for him after striking out three more times on Monday in a loss to the Orioles in Baltimore.
The issues at the plate are a continuation from the end of Devers' 2024 season, when he went 1-for-15 with 11 strikeouts over his final four games. He finished with a .272 batting average, 28 home runs and 83 RBI. He struck out a career-high 147 times.
Sometimes, things have to get worse before they can get better. The Red Sox know that “better” will come -- sooner rather than later -- for Rafael Devers, who went 0-for-3 with two walks and three strikeouts in Boston’s 8-5 loss to Baltimore at Camden Yards on Monday.
The popular BaseballNutHistory X (formerly Twitter) account noted that Devers’ 15 strikeouts have come over 19 at-bats. On the other hand, Gwynn only struck out 19 times in 535 at-bats during the 1995 season.
