Tourists got postcard views in Thailand’s Maya Bay this month, as researchers spotted a jaw-dropping 158 blacktip reef sharks.

Blacktip reef sharks — not to be confused with “oceanic black tipped sharks” — are a small, near-shore shark species growing to a maximum size of around 6 feet and 30-40 lbs.

Sharjah: Sharjah Aquarium, yesterday, produced its first ever shark — a blacktip reef shark, named Amber. The baby shark was born on August 7 and measures slightly over 50 centimetres in length.

Earlier this year, Sharjah Aquarium divers successfully collected Silver, a 1.34 metre long female blacktip reef shark from Shark Island, Khor Fakkan.

Between 30 to 40 shark species live around the Bahamas, although the Caribbean reef shark, the bull shark, the tiger shark and the black tip shark have the highest bite frequency, Naylor said.
