Members at the meeting said in 2023 that Goodyear reported it released over 1,200 pounds of ortho-toluidine on nearly 4,000 residents within two. The DEC’s recommended limit would be 100 pounds.
Internationally, ortho-toluidine has been classified as a “known carcinogen” since 2008, with the United States’ National Institutes of Health declaring the substance carcinogenic in 2014.
Goodyear’s Niagara Falls facility produces low levels of ortho-toluidine emissions and is in full compliance with its current permit. That current permit is decades old.
