The Deccan traps formed during the eruption of a volcano that took place around 66 million years ago and resulted in the end of the Cretaceous period.
Stretching north to south along the western edge of the Deccan plateau it is also called the ‘Great Escarpment of India’ and starts from the border of Gujarat and ends at Kanyakumari.
