The top Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee is ripping Democratic accusations that the GOP wants to cut Medicaid.

Republicans are steering clear of dramatic Medicaid cuts in their spending bill, instead opting for smaller changes backed by moderate and swing-state members who had balked at the prospect of slashing a program that covers more than 70 million low-income and disabled Americans.

House Republicans are proposing work requirements for Medicaid and are planning to limit states’ use of the lucrative provider tax, which some consider a loophole that allows states to increase federal spending on the program.
