Measles cases in the United States have reached their highest number in more than 30 years, according to new federal data published Wednesday.

Of the 1,288 measles cases nationwide, a majority of them come from Texas. The Lone Star state's 753 confirmed cases are the most among the other 30-plus states with cases, according to CDC data. New Mexico's 95 cases are the second-highest in the nation, followed by Kansas' 87 cases.

Measles cases have surpassed a recent 2019 record to reach the highest level since 1992, with at least 1,289 cases reported in 39 states. The milestone comes as health officials are increasingly alarmed by vaccine skepticism gaining a voice in the Trump administration.

The U.S. thought it had eradicated measles 25 years ago. Now the highly contagious disease is back, spiking to more than 1,200 cases already in 2025.

The last measles outbreak of a similar scale occurred in 2019, when a total of 1,274 cases were confirmed across the country. However, 2025 is shaping up to be the largest outbreak in 25 years. There have been three confirmed measles deaths, two children and one adult, thus far in 2025.

Measles cases in the United States have already reached a six-year high this year, data from Johns Hopkins University's outbreak response center showed, as a drop in vaccination rates causes a surge in the disease once eliminated from the country.
