In late January 2025, meteorologists from the National Weather Service Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland, are predicting “dangerously cold temperatures and wind chill values for much of the South and eastern U.

The warming trend continues Friday. After a morning low in the teens, afternoon highs will climb to the mid-30s. Nighttime temperatures will remain chilly heading into the weekend, with lows Saturday morning in the upper teens to near 20. Saturday afternoon will see highs near 40.

A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Wednesday for Washington, D.C., and portions of Maryland, and northern Virginia.

The rare deep freeze in the wake of an historic winter storm that swept across the U.S. South this week will linger through Sunday, leaving the region in the grip of extreme cold and ice and creating dangerous driving conditions.

Sunday marks the start of a significant warm-up. Highs on Sunday afternoon will climb into the lower to mid-40s, while overnight lows will dip into the mid to upper 20s. Monday's high temperatures will reach the lower to mid-40s again.

Most of Maryland is under a cold weather advisory through Thursday as temperatures plummet into the single digits in the region in the wake of the weekend snow.
