Vijay Rupani on Saturday became the fourth BJP leader to step down as Chief Minister of a party-ruled state in six months, after he quit the top post in Gujarat.

Gujarat deputy chief minister Nitin Patel too was present at the ceremony. He is now the frontrunner to replace Rupani 15 months before the Assembly elections in the state.

Born in Yangon (formerly Rangoon) in 1956, Vijay Rupani was a prominent BJP leader who served as the 16th Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2016 to 2021, completing two consecutive terms.
