U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner, who rose from a child in Acres Homes to serve as Houston’s mayor for eight years and was elected to Congress last year, has died. He was 70. His death was confirmed by Houston Mayor John Whitmire,

According to Turner’s family, he was taken to the hospital after President Donald Trump’s speech to a joint session of Congress and was later released. He died at approximately 5:45 a.m. Wednesday from “enduring health complications.
