The Russian River in Sonoma Couty reached moderate flood stage Wednesday and was expected to peak. People in low-lying areas were told to evacuate last night, but some residents have stayed put and are now stuck in their homes waiting for the water to subside.

As of 7 a.m. Wednesday, the Russian River in Guerneville had risen above 36 feet, entering the moderate flood stage, where waters typically inundate the Mirabel RV Park & Campground in Forestville. Multiple businesses and homes in low-lying areas likely experienced flooding. It’s unclear if the river has peaked in Guerneville.

Even as the rain has subsided for the day, evacuation orders are still in place for low-lying areas around the Russian River between Healdsburg and Jenner after a home was pushed into the swollen river.

Locations impacted by the evacuation order include Mirabel Park Resort and Mirabel Trailer Park in Forestville; Johnsons Resort, Parkers Resort, Creekside Resort and Riverside Park in Guerneville; and Old Bohemian Highway in Monte Rio.

An atmospheric river brought additional rain, strong winds, and flooding to the Bay Area Tuesday, triggering evacuation orders for the area around the Russian River in Sonoma County.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday evening issued an evacuation order for low lying areas along the Russian River, the office announced just before 6 p.m.

The NWS says excessive rainfall is expected to cause flooding along the Russian River, affecting roadways and agricultural land.

The rainfall is predicted to push the Russian River up to nearly 33 feet and into the minor flood stage Wednesday morning in Guerneville.

The rain-swollen Russian River reached flood stage in multiple places Wednesday morning in the wake of an atmospheric river-fueled storm that brought a deluge of rain and lashing winds to the Bay Area.
