Despite Merrill Kelly only conceding one earned run, the Diamondbacks couldn't muster anything offensively in a 2-0 loss at the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.

Kelly (9-5, 3.32 ERA) is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, as are several key Diamondbacks, including starting pitcher Zac Gallen and third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who drove in the winning run on Friday.

“Investors were searching for something and not hearing it,” wrote Gene Munster, co-founder of DeepWater Asset Management and longtime Tesla bull, who counted himself among the disappointed. “I wanted to hear more details about how the master plan will advance in the near term.”

The Arizona Diamondbacks will try to make it two straight against the Pirates on July 26 in the second game of their series in Pittsburgh.

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, the Arizona Diamondbacks could have interest in two of their veteran starting pitchers.

He could handle first base duties or potentially serve as a platoon bat, with the Red Sox standing out as a team that could use a lefty hitter at the position. The 2025 MLB trade deadline is July 31 at 6 p.m. ET.

It’s also not as though Kelly would come in and need to be their ace, as he would likely slide in behind Hunter Brown, who, in 20 starts, has a 2.57 ERA and Framber Valdez, who sports a 2.75 ERA in 19 starts.
