Paris' centuries-old Louvre Museum — home of da Vinci's iconic Mona Lisa — is getting an $800 million makeover, and American visitors will have to help pay for it.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced Tuesday that the Mona Lisa will get its own dedicated room inside the Louvre museum, which he said will be renovated and expanded in a major overhaul that will take years to complete.

The renovation at the Louvre Museum in Paris will see the famed Mona Lisa moved to its own, separate space, where it will be easier to manage the crowds. However, visitors will have to purchase an extra ticket to see the work of art.

The French president announced last week an extensive overhaul of the legendary museum, including a dedicated gallery for Leonardo’s masterpiece and a new entrance and exit that would take advantage of long-underused public spaces.

Amid news of the “Mona Lisa” potentially being relocated, Francesca Caruso, cultural assessor for Italy’s Lombardy region, suggested the painting be returned to Milan, where it could be displayed alongside Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” NBC News reported.
