ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) — An Elizabeth City man turned a $1 ticket into a $273,520 jackpot, according to the NC Education Lottery. The lucky ticket was for Multiplier Mania, one of the NC Education Lottery’s digital instant games. William Evans hit the game’s Gold Jackpot, beating the odds of 1 in 14 million.

The player hit the jackpot after stopping at a convenience store in the mountain town of Asheville. The lucky ticket was sold at Fastrac Markets Inc, the N.C. Education Lottery wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

A $422,167 Jersey Cash 5 jackpot was hit on Thursday, July 24, on three separate tickets sold at a Union County shop.

“Something just told me to play that one,” he recalled. “I’m stoked.” It ended up paying off for Evans with a $273,520 jackpot. After taxes, Evans took home $196,251 which he says he plans to spend on buying himself his own place.
