Heavy rainfall has caused widespread damage and water rescues. This weekend's calmer forecast may bring some relief.
Since January, more than 3,100 flash flood warnings have been issued nationwide — the highest year-to-date total since tracking began for alerts in 1986.
On Monday morning, flash floods led to a water rescue at a trail in south Overland Park, where one woman died. The woman, identified as 62-year-old Anupama Vaidya, had been walking on a trail at Negro Creek when flash flood waters swept her away, officials said.
The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory at 11:22 a.m. on Thursday in effect until 2:30 p.m. for Baldwin County.
Thursday is a First Alert Weather Impact Day. The atmosphere is primed for flash flooding beginning late this afternoon and continuing into Friday morning, with a very moist atmosphere, slow storm motions, saturated ground, and the potential for rainfall rates to exceed 1" per hour.
Ruidoso, New Mexico, was impacted by flash flooding for the third time in less than month on Thursday, July 24, as heavy rainfall inundated the area.
