Workers were heating coal and preparing for routine maintenance when an explosion rocked a U.S. Steel plant outside Pittsburgh

Timothy Quinn, 39, of East Huntingdon Township, also died in the incident. Ten other people were injured. Three of them are still hospitalized.

Gwaley called DeHosse, who owns Sparkles by Shell, a Monongahela-based screen print and embroidery business. They are now selling T-shirts, hoodies, and yard signs with the words “Clairton Strong” to raise money for the steelworkers impacted by the explosion.

The fatal Clairton Coke Works blast, which claimed two lives and injured ten, exposes decades of unsafe conditions maintained to protect profits at the expense of workers’ lives.

Governor Josh Shapiro toured the site of Monday’s deadly Clairton Coke Works explosion, pledging full state support for the investigation and recovery.

First responders are on scene at the U.S. Clairton Coke Works plant in Pennsylvania as one worker remains unaccounted for.
