On July 19, 1944, a Nazi submarine torpedoed and sank the Vital de Oliveira, a Brazilian ship that transported troops during World War II. Now, more than 80 years later, the Brazilian Navy has confirmed the location of the ship’s final resting place.

After more than 80 years hidden beneath the waves off Rio de Janeiro, the location of a Brazilian troop transport ship torpedoed and sunk by Nazi Germany was definitively confirmed by Brazil’s navy this week.

The historic vessel "Vital de Oliveira" was positively identified more than a decade after an unsuspecting fisherman's net got caught on the shipwreck.

The Brazilian Navy has confirmed that a wreck found in 2011 is that of a Brazilian auxiliary ship sunk in 1944 by a torpedo from the German U-boat U-861.
