MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- The fight to get rid of the giant African land snail in South Florida has been long and slow, but Wednesday, the state announced Florida has won the battle with the invasive pest.

The snail was first identified in Florida in the 1960s and it took about 10 years to eradicate the over 18,000 snails and eggs, which are known to carry a meningitis-causing parasite.

A giant African land snail, which can pass meningitis onto humans and “devastate” agricultural crops, has been found in central western Florida.
