Uganda has confirmed an outbreak of the Ebola virus in the capital Kampala with the first confirmed patient dying from it on Wednesday, the health ministry said on Thursday.

Ebola cases in Uganda have increased to nine, with 265 people in quarantine. The outbreak's first victim, a male nurse, remains the only fatality. The Health Ministry states eight patients are stable.

In its last outbreak, more than two years ago, Uganda saw 164 cases and 55 confirmed deaths from Ebola. Uganda announced Thursday that a nurse, 32, had died of Ebola in the capital, Kampala, amid a new outbreak of the deadly virus there — the first in two years.

The number of confirmed Ebola cases in Uganda has risen to nine from three, the country's health ministry said.

Nine people were confirmed to have Ebola virus in Uganda and around 265 others are being monitored under quarantine, health authorities have said. The nine include the first victim, a male nurse who died the day before the outbreak was declared on January 30.
