Investigators said the massive wildfire, which started at Table Rock State Park on March 21, was the result of a “negligent act” by four teenage hikers. The young men involved in the incident have been identified. Pickens County Sheriff Tommy Blankenship said he has been contacted by people in the community about charges as well.
Fire crews say a wildfire in Pickens County is mostly contained after burning at least 40 acres of land. According to Pickens Fire and Rescue, the fire along Hwy. 136 East near the Overlook is now 95% contained.
The Table Rock Fire is now estimated to be 8,679 acres, growing almost exclusively on the northern and western sides of the fire, according to infrared data obtained from a surveillance flight at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The fire burned up the North Carolina state line in several places.
After months of struggle and discussions, Pickens County now has its own ambulance service and a new donated ambulance.
