Louisiana-based televangelist Jimmy Swaggart — whose popularity peaked in the 80s — died Tuesday in a Baton Rouge hospital. He was 90.

Jimmy Swaggart is dead. The Pentecostal Televangelist who rose to power throughout the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s to become a fixture of American television before a string of scandals capsized his formidable empire, died today, per Swaggart’s Facebook page. No cause of death was immediately given. He was 90.

Swaggart embodied the transition from traveling evangelist to radio preacher and then televangelist, garnering huge audiences along the way.
