Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, who became a household name amassing an enormous following and multimillion-dollar ministry only to be undone by his penchant for prostitutes, has died. Swaggart died decades after his once vast audience dwindled and his name became a punchline on late night television.

Jimmy Swaggart, one of the country's best-known televangelists who apologized after he was caught in a sex scandal, has died, his ministry's SonLife Broadcasting Network announced in a statement shared with CBS News.

The Pentecostal preacher and pioneer of televangelism had been in critical condition at a Louisiana hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest June 15.
