Polish border checks were causing a tailback on the German side of the border stretching for 7 kilometres near the city of Frankfurt an der Oder, German police reported on Thursday. They did not expect the situation to be resolved soon.

Germany has maintained controls on its border with Poland since 2023, but recently adopted a tougher approach, rejecting undocumented arrivals and sending them back to Poland under EU and bilateral agreements. Polish authorities say this has placed an unfair burden on their country.

Poland introduced temporary controls on its borders with Germany and Lithuania on Monday, in what the government said was a step to check migrants more thoroughly amid public concerns over immigration.
