More snow is expected to fall in the Columbia area, and earlier than expected, as winter storm conditions move westward, the National Weather Service said.

The forecast doubled the amount of snow expected in the Columbia area, as up to 2 inches of the white stuff is now forecast to accumulate, according to the warning. Between 2-3 inches of snowfall is possible in the southern reaches of the Midlands, meteorologists said in the briefing. Localized amounts in other areas could be higher.

There is also a good chance a winter storm will develop around Texas next Monday, then track toward the southeast U.S. If the moisture from this system lines up with sub-freezing temperatures, then we could have a threat for snow or ice in South Carolina next Tuesday or Wednesday.
