Acne treatments sold by Proactiv and Walgreens Boots Alliance are being recalled because they are contaminated with a cancer-causing chemical called benzene, the US Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday.

After a new third-party agency tested 95 acne products containing benzoyl peroxide for possible benzene contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is announcing a limited number of product recalls at the retail level.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration revealed results of new agency testing of over 90 acne products containing benzoyl peroxide for possible benzene contamination. More than 90% of tested products had undetectable or extremely low levels of benzene.

Now more products have been recalled due to the same reason. Health reported Wednesday how L’Oréal took their popular La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo acne treatment due to a potential benzene contamination. An independent lab, Vailsure, alerted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to this issue after testing revealed this contamination.
