Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 carrying 242 people, crashed after taking off from Ahmedabad on its way to London.

Medical students who survived when an Air India plane crashed into their hostel in Ahmedabad say their first reaction was to help treat the injured.

CCTV footage shows the Air India plane taking off from a runway at the international airport in the Indian city of Ahmedabad and crashing shortly after.

The aircraft, Air India flight AI-171, took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon and crashed shortly after in the Meghaninagar area. The plane burst into flames upon impact. Fire and rescue teams were immediately dispatched to douse the blaze, confirmed fire officer Jayesh Khadia.

The Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner plunged with a vertical speed of 475 feet/minute, its tail crashing into BJ Medical College hostel’s mess and killing four students and the wife of a doctor.
