Nearly 1 million Russian troops have been killed or wounded in the war in Ukraine, according to a study released yesterday. Roughly 400,000 Ukrainian troops were also estimated to have been killed or wounded, bringing the total casualties of the three-year conflict to a staggering 1.4 million.

It also roughly chimes with attempts by Russian independent media, such as Meduza and Mediazona, to count the bodies. By this time last year, Meduza reckoned that 106,000-140,000 Russian soldiers had died.

Despite the scale of its losses, Russia has seized less than 1 percent of additional Ukrainian territory since January 2024 and now controls about 20 percent of Ukraine in total. The CSIS study notes that Russian forces are advancing in some areas at a rate of only 165 feet per day—slower than some of the most infamous battles of World War I.

The total number of military casualties on both sides is nearing 1.4 million, including approximately 400,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed or injured.

The Security Service of Ukraine conducted a large-scale operation targeting four Russian military airfields on Sunday, an SBU source confirmed.
