We did 2 walks in 1 day out of Valldemossa. Puig de teix to Puig gros. Then Mola de sa comuna - Coll de sant jordi. Amazing but challenging. Definitely download a map. We used AllTrails app.Full review by Fiona C

I have heard you need permits to hike on the mountain paths. Is that right and can anyone advise how to get them?
A:
I have never heard of such a permit and I live here and walk the Tramuntana every day and have done so for the past 11 years !

This depends on the hike you want to do. If you are wanting to do the Torrent de Pareis I allow 5 hours from Escorca to Sa Colobra even though it is only about 7 km. If you want to hike up Massanella I would allow at least 6 hours for the return trip. But there is a huge number of other trails through the Tramontana and you can make them as long or short as you wish. The longest of all is the 7 day hike from Port Andraitx to Cap Formentor. Happy hiking and please refer to my posts on TA. Edward

Public buses are realible, although you could walk through the city. I rented a stick shift car for $60 per day to go to Taramuntana, it was worth it.
